Tennessee auto insurance minimums in 2026 — and why most drivers should buy more

Tennessee's state-minimum auto coverage is 25/50/15. Here's what that actually means, where it leaves you exposed, and the coverage we recommend instead.

What Tennessee actually requires

Tennessee's financial-responsibility law sets the auto-insurance floor at 25/50/15:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $15,000 property damage per accident

That's the legal minimum. Drive without it and you risk a license suspension, a reinstatement fee, and an SR-22 filing requirement for the next three years. It's not a fight you want to pick.

What 25/50/15 actually buys you

Here's the part the state doesn't put on the sticker. If you cause a serious accident, $25k per person doesn't go far:

  • A single ER visit and overnight stay easily clears $20k.
  • Surgery, rehab, or any lasting injury blows through $50k per accident in weeks.
  • A modern truck or SUV is $50k+ on its own — $15k of property damage doesn't replace it.

When your minimum policy runs out, you're personally on the hook for the rest. The injured driver's lawyer is allowed to come after your wages, your savings, and (in some cases) your home equity.

What we actually recommend

For most Tennessee drivers we quote, we recommend 100/300/100 with uninsured-motorist matching:

  • $100k per person / $300k per accident bodily injury
  • $100k property damage
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) at the same limits

This matters in TN especially because roughly 1 in 4 TN drivers carries minimum-only coverage or no coverage at all. If they hit you, UM/UIM is what pays your hospital bills.

The cost difference is usually less than people expect — often $10-30 per month above minimum-only with the right carrier. The wrong carrier will charge double for the same coverage, which is exactly why we shop.

What raises and lowers your rate

  • Driving record (3-year ticket lookback, 5-year accident lookback in TN)
  • Vehicle year/make/model
  • ZIP code — Nashville and Memphis price higher than rural counties
  • Credit-based insurance score (legal in TN)
  • Bundling with home (typically 10-20% off)
  • Continuous-coverage history (gaps hurt; we coordinate switches so you don't have one)

The bottom line

State minimums protect the other driver, barely. We can absolutely write you a 25/50/15 policy — but most clients regret minimum-only the first time they're rear-ended by an uninsured driver. We'll show you what 100/300/100 actually costs side-by-side. You decide.
